Abstract
This paper takes issue with George P. Landow's frequent suggestion that contemporary hypertexts are the fulfilment of poststructuralist theories of textuality and intertextuality. The paper reminds readers of the themes of communication, consumerism, and Capotalism in the earlier work of Kristeva, Barthes and the other Tel Quel theorists, and suggests that the contemporary claims concerning hypertextuality do not always bear these issues in mind.
