Item APC Microbiome Ireland - 20 years of impact(APC Microbiome Ireland, 2023-12) Hogan, David; Science Foundation IrelandIn the 20 years since our foundation, APC Microbiome Ireland (APC) has had a profound and pioneering impact on the world of microbiome research. And our focus on such major societal challenges as chronic and infectious disease, anti-microbial resistance and sustainable food development means that our ground breaking scientific research has huge relevance to human and planetary health. We have published thousands of papers on excellent science – on average a publication per day each year. We have pioneered new directions of research into microbes and the brain, inflammatory bowel disease and early-life and elderly nutrition. We have discovered thousands of new species of microbes that will underpin medical treatments and will protect foods of the future, displacing antibiotics and increasing sustainability. We have spun out companies that are translating these discoveries to the clinic and market. The depth of our science and our focus on solutions makes APC a household name in microbiome research. Our researchers are recognised as being among the most highly cited and influential in the world. Industry and academics around the world - from Ireland to New Zealand and back - want to work with us, and our science communication and public engagement bring our discoveries into conversations in media, schools and homes. By understanding the composition and structures of the microbiomes in, on and around us, APC is developing new and sustainable tools and approaches to optimising those malleable microbiome communities to support global sustainability and health from infancy to old age. And the common denominator underpinning this scientific excellence is our people. At APC we are a family of like-minded and passionate experts working on a world full of microbes. I congratulate our APC family on the last 20 years and look forward to our coming decades of further excellence and impact, mobilising microbes for planet and people health.Item APC Microbiome Ireland - 15 years of impact(APC Microbiome Ireland, 2018-12) Hogan, David; Science Foundation IrelandAmbitious, dynamic, transdisciplinary, APC Microbiome Ireland (APC) is a flagship Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Research Centre…and much more. It is a global leader in microbiome science and an agent of change. From the outset the APC has adhered to its mission: ‘Linking Irish science with industry and society through excellence in research, education and public engagement in gastrointestinal health’. Impact has been wide-ranging and includes economic growth, development of human skills, scientific and medical discovery with translation to new medical and dietary therapy, public health policy, and societal engagement. APC investigates the microscopic organisms (microbes) that live in and on the body in health and disease. This community of microbes (microbiota) includes bacteria, yeasts and viruses which are beneficial and necessary for optimal human development but may occasionally represent a risk for development of disease in susceptible individuals. APC has pursued three main lines of scientific pursuit: firstly, to develop new diagnostics or biomarkers of health or risk of disease based on analysis of the microbiota; secondly, to explore mechanisms by which the microbiota may be favourably mobilised or manipulated; and thirdly to ‘mine’ the microbiota for new drugs and/or functional food ingredients. In addition to research, APC trains the next generation of scientists to become the industry and academic leaders of tomorrow. APC encourages the general public, including students from 1st to 4th level, to think scientifically and to engage in scientific debate of societal relevance. Since its foundation in 2003, APC has leveraged four successive phases of seed funding from SFI to attract additional investment from industry collaborators and funding sources including the European Union, and philanthropy. Simply stated, for every €1 of core investment by SFI, the APC has realised an additional €1.84 externally. This multiplier effect – a doubling of taxpayer investment – is a rarity in any field of public endeavour. Indeed, when economic hardship struck Ireland a decade ago, our scientists delivered and APC flourished. This report is an acknowledgement of government support for research and human capital development. It is testimony to the achievements of a dedicated group of scientists, and provides an overview of the economic, scientific, human capital and societal impacts of APC Microbiome Ireland. We intend it to serve as a benchmark for the future.Item The economic and societal impact of University College Cork(University College Cork, 2024-11) Yin, Yuping; Hogan, David; Doran, Justin; Hutchinson, MarkThis study investigates the economic and societal impact of UCC, updating the 2018 Economic and Societal Impact of University College Cork report. The Financial Year 2021/2022 has been used as the reference year for the financial analysis. This report highlights the extensive economic, social and cultural impact of UCC, reflecting its pivotal role in the Cork region, nationally and beyond. It presents a select number of case studies as examples of the range and breath of the impact of UCC.Item The economic and societal impact of University College Cork - Executive summary(University College Cork, 2018-05) Hutchinson , Mark; Hogan, DavidAn ambitious, agile university with a modern focus, of rich historic heritage, UCC sits nestled in the western fringes of Cork city as if it has always been there. Reaching out into the community, both locally and globally, there are undeniable educational, financial, developmental, medical, societal and cultural benefits to having a leading-edge, world-class university in the city. In the same way that UCC’s role in society and the community has developed extensively over the past 173 years, the University has also become engrained economically in Ireland and the South West. You will see from our detailed analysis that UCC is now of vital importance to the national and local economies and to the Exchequer.Item The economic and societal impact of University College Cork(University College Cork, 2018-05) Hutchinson , Mark; Hogan, DavidThis study provides an in-depth analysis of University College Cork’s impact across five key areas, as well as considering the context in which UCC operates. The report examines the following: UCC’s economic impact at a national and regional level, through the expenditure of UCC itself, the spending of those employed by UCC, those who study there, those who have graduated in the past year, as well as those who visit UCC on an annual basis. The report evaluates the national taxation impact, the employment impact in Cork and the South-West Region, both as a result of direct and indirect jobs, the impact of current and future capital projects, and the impact of visitors and exports. We note that the impact of international students is particularly important from an expenditure and job creation perspective. UCC’s workforce development impact in the region and beyond, including the ability to graduate high calibre ‘world-ready’ and ‘work-ready’ individuals. We look at the investment into, and the output from, a UCC graduate’s education, in financial terms. We examine the subsequent effect on the salary of UCC graduates in the first year after graduation vis-a-vis non-graduates, and what this might mean financially over the lifetime of a professional career. UCC has a significant business impact and contribution to the wider Irish and international economy. This stems from the University’s leading position in relation to research and development activities, its role in attracting foreign direct investment and indigenous investment, as well as UCC’s impact on innovation and entrepreneurship. This section concludes by examining UCC’s pivotal contribution to local business in Cork and the South-West region. UCC’s impact in relation to creation and discovery. UCC is clearly driving growth nationally, particularly for the South-West region, through its significant research and development capabilities. It has a crucial role to play in knowledge creation and discovery, technology and knowledge transfer as well as a key role in commercialising that knowledge. Furthermore, UCC’s role in creation and discovery has a real impact on society and the community. Work emanating from UCC impacts the lives of millions of people around the globe. UCC’s impact on our society and in our community. UCC’s societal impact is as wide as its financial impact is deep. We examine UCC’s impact on social responsibility and the promotion of responsible processes, the physical environment impact, socio-cultural impact and the leading role UCC has taken with regard to widening participation in higher education. We look at the impact of consistent engagement with the community, cultural and sporting impacts, the impact on the health of our citizens and conclude by looking at UCC from an environmental and sustainability impact perspective.
