Abstract
This research was done in collaboration with the CARL initiative in UCC and with Aglish Community Development Committee (ACDC). This research investigated the social needs, wishes and preferences of young people in a rural community in West Waterford. This need was identified by the Aglish Community Development Committee as they leased a 2-acre site from Waterford City & County Council for a potential development. It was important to ACDG to engage with the young people in the area so they could have a say in what facilities are to be developed within the community. Primary research was conducted with transition year students by means of semi-structured one to one interviews. The findings of this research indicate there is a need to provide young people in the area with suitable spaces and places to meet with friends. Findings also indicated that young people feel they are connected to their community by means of their membership in sport, however they do not feel like their voice is being heard when it comes to decisions being made in their locality. Based on the data collected several
recommendations have been made which will hopefully inform potential developments in the Aglish community.
