dc.description.abstractÉamonn Ó Carragáin (28 May 1942 – 18 October 2024) was Professor of Old and Middle English at University College Cork. When his health declined in August 2024, he realised it would not be possible to write the short book he had recently started working on. The hypothesis at the core of the book was that two closely related poems, the Ruthwell Cross Crucifixion Poem and The Dream of the Rood, when seen as coherent, and understood within their immediate contexts (the Ruthwell high cross and the Vercelli Book), contain original and closely related theologies. These theologies correspond to themes found in Bede’s early commentaries, in particular his commentaries on the Song of Songs and on the gospel according to Luke. Bede’s Commentary on Luke suggests that the poet of the first version of The Dream of the Rood came from the Circle of Bede and was inspired by the emphasis on women in that commentary. This document is an unfinished draft of Chapter 1 of the planned book comprising a commentary on the first 43 lines of The Dream of the Rood in the light of Bede’s Commentary on Luke. It was the author’s hope that, even in this incomplete form, it might prove useful to other scholars.en
