Abstract
This chapter examines freedom of association in Indonesia, which encompasses the legal recognition of the rights held by civil society organisations. The author follows Salamon, Sokolowski and List by defining civil society organisations in a broad sense, i.e., those organisations that exist outside the institutional structures of the government.2 Within this definition, the term ‘civil society organisations’ signifies self-governing associations, allowing people to join, participate and or channel their solidarity voluntarily, including both informal and formal registered organisations, as well as those of a religious and secular nature.
