Abstract
There are over 3,000 recorded holy wells across the island of Ireland. These wells range from springs that attract a small number of visitors, such as Tober Rí an Domnaig near Ballinspittle or St Bartholomew’s Well / Tobar Partalam, near Bantry, to more elaborate manicured locations that receive hundreds, if not thousands, of believers annually, including Tubrid, Millstreet or Gougane Barra. These springs are often connected with religious figures. The sites serve as evidence of saintly lives imprinted on the landscape – both evidence of their presence and as nodal points of continuing devotion. For example, St Colman’s Well near Cloyne appeared after the religious leader had prayed for water, while St Fanahan’s Well, Mitchelstown has traditionally been the site of many cures.
