Objectives: To explore perceptions of physical activity behaviour in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Design: An interpretive descriptive design using focus groups and reflexive thematic analysis. Findings were mapped to the theoretical domains framework and the capability, opportunity, motivation, behaviour (COM-B) model. Results: Twenty-two people living in The Republic of Ireland with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, mean age 72 years (Mean (SD) 72(6.11) years), six males, 16 females, participated in four focus groups in relation to their physical activity behaviour. Three themes and seven subthemes were identified. Theme 1) connection and meaningfulness, subthemes: benefits of social support on physical activity behaviour, reduced shame and stigma through peer support. Theme 2) social and environmental context, subthemes: routine, barriers and facilitators, influence of a credible source. Theme 3) the body as a limiting factor, subthemes: the mind is willing but the body is not able, planning and pacing. The most frequent theoretical domains and COM-B components mapped to theme three, the body as a limiting factor. Perceived positive influences on physical activity behaviour were most commonly mapped to motivation as a mechanism of action. Conclusions: Themes generated in this study suggest that interventions such as peer support, forming and maintaining healthy physical activity habits, and encouragement from providers may be useful in influencing physical activity behaviour in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Future theory-informed behaviour change research on physical activity in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is required to examine influences on behaviour in this complex disease and to determine effective strategies for initiating and sustaining healthy physical activity behaviour.en
