Abstract
In the Introduction to this collection, Maria Cahill writes that “right to freedom of association protects individuals in their sociality, in the collaborative context of their relationships with others”. As the good that is protected by the right to freedom of association, sociality here appears as a value. Although existing rationales for freedom of association focus on its protection of the individual’s right to live their lives as they see fit or on the ways in which it serves a healthy democracy, and even on the ways that associations support self-development and flourishing, none of those defences focuses on the dimension of sociality that is inherent to associations.
