This study is concerned with looking at the supports required for students with Asperger’s Syndrome to successfully transition to third level education. It is a participatory research project in collaboration with the National Learning Network. The organisation proposes developing a pre college transition programme for students with Asperger’s Syndrome to run for an academic year prior to commencing a place in third level education. This research aims to support the development of this programme by establishing a need for it and subsequently determining areas which are critical to be included. In order to meet these research aims, the research uses two strategies; 1) an analysis of relevant literature and 2) qualitative interviews with third level students who have a diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome. The literature provides a legislative context, international case studies and best practise guidelines for the proposed programme. The qualitative interviews offer descriptions of the lived experiences of third level education for students with Asperger’s Syndrome. The findings and conclusions from the literature and the qualitative accounts establish a need for the programme and identify supports which are necessary to be incorporated into it. Consequently, these conclusions culminate in recommendations to the National Learning Network in order for them to develop a programme of support which is appropriate to the identified needs of the students.en
