dc.description.abstract | In the modern pursuit of harnessing light for technical applications, lasers have emerged as remarkably precise and versatile devices. Nonlinear photonics has emerged as a captivating and insightful field at the forefront of contemporary science and technology. To study nonlinear photonics is to understand the generation of new frequencies of light. This thesis explores the field of nonlinear photonics in five chapters: Chapter 1 discusses nonlinear phenomena seen throughout the thesis, Chapter 2 focuses on the development of a delay-differential rate equation model, Chapter 3 details the simulation of a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) device using the developed model, Chapter 4 explores novel uses for the model through questioning widely accepted ideas, and finally, Chapter 5 the model is expanded to optimise desirable qualities and characteristics, serving as a guide to inform future device design. These chapters approach theoretical questions from the lens of dynamical systems and while placing the results in context within a wide array of technical applications across multiple fields of interest. | en |
