| dc.description.abstract | Issues concerning refugees and asylum seekers garner significant attention and discussion in Ireland. Debates about direct provision incite considerable controversy and occupy substantial space in media and political discussions. However, there is a noticeable lack of understanding regarding the experiences of the Kurdish community following their post-naturalisation. What is lifelike for them and their families now that they are safe, settled in Ireland, and hold an Irish passport? In some respects, naturalisation is assumed to signify the end of Kurdish suffering and the beginning of happiness or contentment. This empirical research suggests that naturalisation serves as the starting point from which other deeply embedded issues of trauma, disenfranchised grief, and complex loss arise. Utilising data collected through biographical interviews, this empirical research examines the lived experiences of Kurdish refugees in Cork and Dublin, Ireland. It analyses new dynamics that emerge after naturalisation, with specific reference to experiences of trauma, disenfranchised grief, and ambiguous loss. | en |
