| dc.description.abstract | Biomarkers play a crucial role in cancer research, particularly in the context of precision oncology. A wide range of strategies exist to detect disease associated endogenous genes, proteins or activity. This thesis focuses on exploiting bacteria or bacterial-produced proteins in biomarker contexts. Chapter 2 describes the development of a detection system of biomarker activity, produced from bacteria; Chapter 3 describes development of a platform for deployment of biomarker detectors, produced from bacteria; while Chapter 4 examines the factors contributing to the success or failure of three clinical microbiome wide association studies (MWAS), in the context of patient accrual and the resources and systems required for set-up by measuring set-up time. Chapter 5 compares preliminary sequencing results of the MWAS in Chapter 4 to the current published literature. | |
