Abstract
Buntús Gaeilge was a three-year scientific analysis undertaken in 1966, of the daily conversation of adults in Gaeltacht areas of Ireland (Department of Education 1966). Based on this analysis, new Irish language programmes for primary and secondary schools and for adults were developed. The background to Buntús Gaeilge and the subsequent development and implementation of pioneering pedagogical approaches based on the analysis are explored in this chapter, which draws heavily on the personal papers of Tomás Ó Domhnalláin, one of the researchers on the project and author of the highly successful Irish language programme, Buntús Cainte.
