Abstract
This article examines the protection and exercise of the right to freedom of association in Nigeria. It discusses the freedom in the context of its historical and political background. The article delineates the ambit of the freedom under the constitution and other relevant legal frameworks in Nigeria. It further examines the nexus between the right and customary norms. It looks at the approach of the Nigerian courts to the interpretation and application of the legal framework. It also examines the influence of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights in the protection of the right in the country. In addition, the article examines how the legal framework for the right impacts trade unions and civil society organisations, especially in the light of attempts to restrict the freedom.
