This chapter offers a comprehensive exploration of physical education (PE) teachers' belief systems and their profound influence on pedagogical practice and curriculum development. It synthesizes a wide range of research that examines the origins, definitions, and evolution of teacher beliefs, underscoring that these deeply ingrained convictions emerge from personal experiences, cultural contexts, and pre-service education. These beliefs guide decisions on content selection, teaching strategies, and assessment practices in PE. Grounded in value orientations theory, the chapter details how teachers' educational value profiles influence their curricular decisions. It further discusses the development of measurement tools, such as the Value Orientation Inventory and scales assessing pre-service beliefs about the PE profession, which have provided evidence linking belief systems to teaching practices. The discussion extends to the process of occupational socialization, outlining a four-phase model that spans from early acculturation through professional and organizational phases, illustrating how field experiences and teacher training gradually shape and modify these beliefs. A key aspect of the discussion is the “belief-action” gap, where differences between stated intentions and classroom practices reveal the need for more effective professional development interventions. Overall, the chapter stresses that a nuanced understanding of teachers' belief systems is essential for enhancing PE instruction and improving student outcomes. It advocates for continued research and innovative teacher education programs aimed at aligning theoretical insights with practical teaching experiences, thereby bridging the gap between deeply held beliefs and effective classroom practices.en
