Project Background The European University of Cities in Post-Industrial Transition (UNIC) is an “alliance of ten universities across Europe who are working with their cities and with one another to tackle urban challenges and develop shared, sustainable futures.” One of the key priorities for UNIC is to contribute to the “resilience and renaissance of Europe’s post-industrial urban centres”, by “fostering a new generation of students with the knowledge, skills and societal consciousness to act as change-leaders, active citizens and builders of our common European future, shaping the European Education Area.” As part of the first phase of UNIC collaborations, in 2023 University College Cork (Ireland) and the University of Łódź (Poland) separately commenced projects examining elements of public participation and risk communication in urban environments. Both projects resulted in publications addressing aspects of good practice in public engagement and communication. In August 2024, academics in University College Cork, working in partnership with colleagues in Malmö University (Sweden) and the local city authorities in Cork and Malmö, published Guidance on Risk Communication & Community Engagement Practices: Experiences from Cork, Ireland and Malmö, Sweden. Meanwhile, in April 2025, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Urban Studies at the University of Łódź published a report entitled: Participatory Urban Adaptation to Climate Change: A Guide for the Effective Collaboration of Local Governments and City Residents. As a result of the UNIC network, representatives from Cork, Malmö and Łódź met at the UNIC annual conference held in Malmö in May 2025.en
