The lack of research institutions in the Isle of Man means that research into Manx language topics faces additional obstacles in terms of securing institutional and funding support. It is possible, of course, for scholars to obtain grants from major funders in the UK, Ireland and further afield, as both of the present authors have demonstrated in recent doctoral and postdoctoral projects. A notable recent achievement in this connection is a project to transcribe and analyse eighteenth-century Manx manuscript sermons (), the first externally-funded collaborative research project focusing on Manx language and literature, which was supported by the British Academy and Leverhulme Trust Small Project grant with additional funding from the Manx cultural organization Culture Vannin. Although these examples show that progress is possible, researchers making the case for funding work on Manx topics inevitably face additional challenges in demonstrating the relevance and impact of their projects, in comparison with larger minority languages such as Irish, Welsh or Basque, where there are dedicated institutions, academic departments, publication outlets and funding schemes for the languages in questions. Among other impacts, we hope that this special issue may stimulate discussion within the Isle of Man regarding possibilities for better supporting research and higher education in the island, both in respect of the Manx language and more generally.
