This book presents soil as a dynamic and essential component of Earth systems, moving beyond its common understanding as merely a physical substrate for plant growth. Across its modules, the material introduces the main processes of soil formation, the interaction between environmental factors and pedogenesis, the organisation of soil horizons and profiles, soil biodiversity, and the role of soils in the provision of key ecosystem services. Designed as an educational resource and written in accessible language, the book combines up-to-date scientific foundations with pedagogical proposals aimed at teacher education and the teaching of Geography and Earth Sciences. The suggested activities encourage observation, integrated landscape interpretation, and the use of diverse teaching resources, fostering a critical understanding of the relationships between soils, environment, and society. By bringing together scientific knowledge, education, and environmental awareness, the book seeks to strengthen recognition of soil as a natural heritage asset that is indispensable to life and to the sustainability of territories.en
