Abstract
This German teaching resource is designed for use in teacher education with the goal of fostering (prospective) teachers’ reflective competence regarding multilingualism. Since many students begin their training with a monolingual notion of normality - which can unconsciously lead to educational disadvantage and linguicism in everyday school life - a systematic examination of their own attitudes toward multilingualism-related topics is necessary. Authentic “multilingualism biographies,” written by teacher education students at the University of Wuppertal, Germany, serve as the basis for this reflection. These biographies were initially collected during teacher training modules and were subsequently analyzed and developed into practical teaching materials as part of the MERREM (2021-2025) project. These biographies help make personal concepts and unconscious beliefs about multilingualism visible and open to discussion. They support the transfer of academic knowledge into action-oriented, professional knowledge. To enable direct and flexible use in teacher education and professional development, the teaching materials consist of a total of three files: MERREM Handout: Accompanying theoretical and conceptual explanations. MERREM Bio Cards: Edited biographical texts by the students as a basis for reflection. MERREM Didactic Cards: Methodological suggestions and specific assignments for designing seminars.
