dc.description.abstractUnder Constans II, the mint at Carthage struck a third siliqua c.647-51 with the legend PAX on the reverse. Varied attempts have been made to interpret this in reference to some contemporary political event. It is argued here that that when Byzantine coins of the 7th century proclaim peace, this represents a theological rather than a political statement, and should not be interpreted in reference to a specific contemporary event, but to the continued state of affairs between God and humankind since the crucifixion of Christ.en
