Abstract
This article, written in 1987, attempts to provide a vision for the future of education. While recognising that technological advances will contribute to educational change and development, the article rejects suggestions that the classrooms of the future will be "equipped with robots programmed to act as teachers". It points out that educational change has always been evolutionary rather than revolutionary and emphasises the central role of teachers in the system. It states that "in the final analysis, it is the teachers and only the teachers who can implement change within the classroom.
